Are You in a Stage of Change?

One of the ways a Health Coach effectively supports their clients is by identifying the stage of change they are in. Change and adopting new habits doesn’t happen overnight and believe it or not, there are stages we all go through. Did you know there are six stages of change, identified by James Prochaska, that we move through and back and forth in?

Identifying what stage you are in can bring you closer to taking action and staying motivated. If you are considering making a change or taking on a new routine, are you able to identify what stage you are in? Read through the list of stages below. You may instantly recognize what stage you are in, or it may take some deeper thought.

Leaning into change means evaluating and coming to an awareness of what is true. When we do lean into change, there are one of 6 stages we could be in or moving between:

  • Precontemplation: I’m not ready to change, I defend poor habits, I don’t think the change is worth it, and I don’t know how to do it.

What defenses are keeping you from moving forward?

  • Contemplation: I’m thinking about it, I have doubts and delay moving forward. Pros and cons of change seem equal, always searching for certainty and not taking action.

What change do you desire and believe is possible?

  • Preparation: I am ready and I see the benefits of change, and I might be a little worried about failure.

What are some small realistic action steps you can take? Looking back at past attempts to make a change, what did you learn and what plans could you put in place this time to increase success?

  • Action: Typically the most demanding stage. I am doing the thing, I maybe not be at my best in all areas as my focus has shifted. At this point, sharing with friends and family is helpful as they can offer support and may relieve some of their usual demands of your time and energy.

At this stage, how will you increase your resources, ask for support, celebrate small wins and manage stress?

  • Maintenance: I’m still doing the thing, this is the new me! My environment is set up for success, I have support and strategies in place to overcome barriers.

How will you ensure your environment and social circles are set up for continued success?

  • Termination: This new habit or change is now your new normal! It’s just who you are and something you are proud of! Others look up to you and seek you out for support on their journey.

How will you continue to build strength, gratitude and potentially help others?

These 6 stages are important to note and can help you become aware of where you might be on your path to making a change, whether big or small!
