What’s Your Mental Health Check-in Routine?
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health as we know, is extremely important to our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. Do you think about your mental health, are you aware of your emotions and/or thoughts and how they may be showing up in your day to day? Some of us are very in tune to our mental health and others simply are not, or just don’t think much about it. It really depends what your focus is. Most of us don’t tap in or check in with ourselves until there is actually a problem bubbling up. Feeling stress and anxiety, feelings of fatigue and low energy could be signs you need to check in with yourself and explore the idea of self-care. However, if you are a busy professional or parent, you might even ask, “What the heck is self-care and what does that even mean?”
Self-care can be and mean different things for each of us. That’s why it’s important to check-in with yourself and your feelings to identify what it is you might be needing at this moment to decrease your stress or gain that energy back.
Try these simple self-check methods:
Rate your mood on a scale of 1–10: How have you felt today? This week?
Notice changes in sleep, appetite, energy, or motivation.
Check your thoughts: Are they mostly positive, negative, or neutral?
Track your stress levels and identify your biggest sources.
Reflect on relationships: Do you feel supported or isolated?
Ask yourself: “What do I need right now?”
Once you've checked in, give yourself what you need:
Take a walk or move your body in a way that feels good
Make time for deep breathing or short meditations
Prioritize sleep and rest
Unplug from screens and social media
Connect with someone you trust
Journal your thoughts or gratitude
Set boundaries that protect your energy
Treat yourself with compassion—especially on hard days
Mental health check-ins don’t have to be time-consuming, but they do need to be consistent. Even five mindful minutes a day can create space for awareness, healing, and growth.
What do you need right now?
A break, a deep breath
A nutritious complete meal
A good night’s sleep
Hydration
To have a meaningful conversation with a friend or relative
A walk outside, sunshine, movement that gets the heart pumping,
A relaxing massage
